“In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil’s might
Beware my power–Green Lantern’s light!”
After the disaster that was the 2011 Green Lantern film many a fan grew wary of a new Green Lantern film, but with the DCEU ramping up could the Green Lantern Corps be a redemption for past Lanterns?
Hey Nerds!
It’s been a little while since we heard anything about the Green Lantern Corps film, set to release sometime in 2020. With a release date so far away the most we can hope for right now is a cameo of one or more of our favorite Lanterns in the upcoming Justice League, hitting theaters November 17th.
Now we know a lot of you are either going to be excited or terrified of what the film may bring especially after the massive flop the last Green Lantern movie took. You have every right to be either of those because all we really have is a super vague release date and idea.
Here’s what we know so far:
Writers
Earlier this year we found out who the writers will be and some key characters. Warner Bros. spoke to and signed David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes as the confirmed writers of the Green Lantern Corps film. If those names sounds familiar, good, they should. Goyer has been a key piece in the DCEU with credits to the Batman Vs. Superman film and Man Of Steel. Of course those aren’t the only DC-related projects he’s worked as he was also one of many to work on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and the show-runner of the Constantine TV show.
Key Characters
As far as the films characters go the movie will prominently feature both Hal Jordon and John Stewart, the two most popular and beloved of the Green Lanterns. If you’re a fan of the old Justice League cartoon series we’re sure you’re just as excited as we are to hear that John Stewart will finally be entering the DCEU.
We don’t have any specific plot points or news about the films story or even how it will affect the DCEU in it’s current state but its safe to say the addition of not one, but two popular Green Lanterns will leave a definite mark on the DCEU. Hopefully during the Justice League film later this year we’ll get at least a taste of the Green Lanterns and what the future film will entail.
Seriously, all you need to show us is a sly cameo. Like, just imagine it, maybe Bruce and Diana or the others are planning their attack against the parademons, maybe its towards the end and they decide to form an official Justice League, and they’re walking down a street then all of a sudden they stop to say something serious and then the camera pans ever so slowly to the left where we see a cafe table, with one or two men. One of the men has an aviator jacket on and a little green ring… BAM! Done. That’s all we need, WB. Please and thank you.
Concept
Now that we know that the film will feature both Hal Jordon and John Stewart, we’ve also learned that the film will be a sort of buddy-cop film, but ya know… IN SPACE. Deadline described the film as Lethal Weapon in space, and it’s based on a comic book origin story. John Stewart, the latter of the two, was an African American Marine sniper before he joined the Lantern Corps. According to Deadline, the story will focus on his relationship with Jordan and the Corps.
Actor Shortlist
There hasn’t been an official casting for either character yet but we did get a shortlist of actors that have been considered. Reported first by The Wrap, here’s the current list:
- Tom Cruise (ew?)
- Ryan Reynolds (Yeah… No…)
- Jake Gyllenhaal (Eh)
- Armie Hammer (Yes please)
- Bradley Cooper (Eh again)
- Joel McHale (No, just no)
You can tell some of our hopes and opinions for who we see done the Lantern ring and mask. Unfortunately no shortlist has been provided for John Stewart but fans have been clamoring to cast their own favorite actors for the part. Even Sterling K. Brown has offered to take on the part after he was cast in Marvel’s Black Panther. We’re noticing a trend here with Marvel actors moving into DCEU films, aren’t you?
Here’s a quick shortlist of the most popular Fancasts of John Stewart:
- Sterling K. Brown (YEESSSSSSSSSSS)
- Omari Hardwick (Sure)
- Leslie Odom Jr (Eh, I guess a younger John?)
- Omar Sy (Yes please)
- Trai Byers (Eh again)
- Ricky Whittle (No…)
Rumors say that Ryan Reynolds, the current Deadpool and previous Hal Jordon may be included in the Corps film. Nothing specific but it has left fans a little worried since the last time Ryan played Hal the movie itself was… terrible, to say the least. That of course was not the fault of Ryan or the crew of the film necessarily as it was just the lack of focus and identity within the film. Still, the last film did leave a bad taste in everyone mouth so it’s expected that people will be hesitant about the Corps film.
Will Ryan reprise his role as Hal Jordon? ….Maybe? We hope not but, DC does like to poke fun at itself, take for example the New 52’s Lobo, or AKA “Lipstick Lobo”, who ironically enough now, was captured and imprisoned in a Green Lantern comic. The Corps film is still a long ways away now so we’ll just have to sit back and enjoy the DCEU films coming out till then.
Rumors
As with any film, especially a DCEU one, there are rumors constantly flooding the internet, all of them surrounding the film at hand. So here are some of the rumors we’ve found regarding the Green Lantern Corps film.
Three’s a crowd
This rumor is a little more recent but it’s a rumor all the same. This rumor states that the movie will focus on THREE Lanterns, not just the two we know of. It also states that the third Lantern will be Guy Gardner (Not really a well-liked Lantern…). If the movie is to focus on Hal and John and their relationship to each other and the corps we can see them bringing Guy and other Lanterns is as side or background characters. We doubt Guy Gardner will be a main character though, he’s far from a fan favorite as far as the Lanterns go and it would feel out of place.
Learning from the Master
This rumor is much more plausible. The rumor says that the film will revolve around an older Hal teaching a younger John, which is entirely possible and hopefully true. Like Sinestro was to Hal, Hal shall be onto John, the mentor, the friend, the push he needs to be a Lantern. Hal Jordon mentoring John would be great to see on-screen, not only will we see Hal again, experienced and around his prime, a continuation of a story we’ve yet to see, but we can see him passing his knowledge onto John, the newbie, a blank slate, the origin story. It’s a perfect fit for what we know so far.
Two Films are better than one… right?
This will be the last rumor we’ll go through for now and this one states that we will have two Green Lantern films. The first film will feature Hal and John while the second will star Guy Gardner. Why people seem to have such a thing for Guy is beyond us but it’s not entirely impossible. It wouldn’t be favored to have Guy star in his own film but hey, to each their own we guess?
There are plenty of other rumors running around so if you’re interested in reading them make sure to check out this page.
